Wow. Technorati revamped their sites look, functionality, and apparently, the underlying business model.

Check the comments underneath their announcement for the new site.

Lots of comments.

- They are apparently moving from a “blog search” model to a “write articles for us, for free” model. They even fib a little bit by adding an ad to everyone’s profile that says “This technorati user writes for technorati…if you are a writer, find out how you can too”. Even if that person never agreed to, or ever wrote anything for Technnorati.

- Huge issues with blogs that were deleted in the change.

- Authority scores reduced, almost across the board, with no explanation next to the new score. There is an explanation of sorts somewhere, but you have to search around technorati.com, blogs.technorati.com, getsatisfaction.com, and a dozen other places to find it.

- Ping button removed because “we’re so good at finding your posts, we don’t need it anymore”. Of course, invalidated in that they’ve already admitted issues with finding posts. Heh.

- Blog search broken. Now you have to use + symbols and other non-intuitive search strings to find what you are looking for.

All in all, a stellar mess.

It seems that technorati removed all the links in it’s support forum that allow you to post in the forum. Also, their blog has no comment facility. This was right before they flubbed up a data center move, and then made unpopular changes to their authority system.

Handy, right? Put tape over your customer’s mouths right before you enact two events that you know will make them unhappy.

From plainsfeminist.blogspot.com:

It just does. I used to be able to look up my blog ranking easily – it would give me a number (the number of websites that link) and a rankings (the number of blogs more popular than mine, essentially). And Technorati used to update my ranking quite regularly.

Now – I have a number of new sites linking to me over the past couple of weeks, but none of them are showing up on my Technorati searches. And when I search from the main page, I have to run two searches – first a search that results in “There is nothing in the known universe about plainsfeminist,” and then I have to click on “blogs” on that page in order to find any links to my blog.

Read the full story at pcmech.com: Why technorati sucks – for now.

Here’s an excerpt of the issues they’ve had getting their blog recognized by the technorati system:

So, they have it in their database, but no they don’t. Confused yet? I am. Oh, and yes, I did try the “ping us”. It doesn’t work. Besides, PCMech pings Technorati every time something is posted – which is a few times per day. So, they’ve gotten a LOT of pings from PCMech, yet we’re not in their index. At least properly.
